Self build co-housing project

Ballydehob West Cork Ireland

A group of friends, five retired couples linked by their design and craft practices, were looking to explore and develop a co-living project on a tight, rocky site with potential flooding issues in the village of Ballydehob, West Cork. The design explores ways the couples could live both independently and collectively and proposes varying levels of shared spaces and communal facilities. The potential for self-build elements in the construction led to a re-examination of the Segal Method and the proposals update the original Walter Segal philosophy for 21st century construction techniques, particularly through digitally enabled prefabrication.
