Private Home

Richmond Upon Thames

Constructed within a conservation area in Richmond Upon Thames the design of this new build family house acknowledges its neighbouring Victorian buildings and responds to them in a contemporary manner. The deep plan of the house is organised around a central atrium space from which all the main rooms of the house open. This arrangement allows the spaces and activities to overlap and is designed to find a middle ground between modern open plan living and more traditional separate rooms. Large sliding walls and doors give the family flexibility and choice in how they inhabit each space and relate to the rest of the family. This unique private family home has been widely published and was runner up for the RIBA Manser Awards for the Best House in Britain in 2002.
